“Dean, look out!”
“Holy shit!” Dean’s eyes widened as he slammed on the breaks, swerving to avoid the huddled form in the centre of the road. The car screeched to a halt inches from a tree and he stayed seated, clutching the steering wheel and breathing deeply for a moment.
He glanced at Bobby, who was still looking a little wild-eyed, and then shook his head. He glanced in the rear view mirror and seriously considered just leaving, but they were literally in the middle of nowhere and if it was someone who was truly in trouble… geez, he was turning into his brother.
“I so do not have time for this,” he growled under his breath, getting out of the car amidst Bobby’s protests. He pulled out his gun, but wasn’t quite ready to aim it at the seemingly helpless form. Not yet, anyway. He could see Bobby in his peripheral vision and noted that their father’s friend didn’t seem to share that sentiment, as his gun was already drawn and aimed.
He turned back to look at her. He had known immediately that it was a woman. Although, given that he’d spent the better part of his life observing that particular sex, the realisation really wasn’t that alarming. She was clearly shaking, but he suspected it was more to do with the temperature and the remnants of the rain, than anything else. In fact, he wasn’t entirely sure she was all there in the head, given that she’d barely reacted to the fact that he’d almost mowed her down with his car. And wouldn’t it be just his luck to get saddled with a crazy person when he had too much to be dealing with already.
“Hey, Miss, you okay?”
She let out what sounded like a mirthless laugh and slowly turned her head to look at him. He let out a shaky breath when her eyes met his, a low thrum of something suspiciously like recognition running down his spine as she blinked uncomprehendingly at him and for the life of him he couldn’t pull his eyes away from her gaze. She had looked petite before, but now she just looked so utterly fragile that it kicked up an instinct in him that he’d only ever really felt towards his brother before. It was that realisation that he wanted to protect her from whatever had put that look in her eyes that told him he was screwed even if she wasn’t a demon. He totally didn’t need this right now.
“Miss,” Bobby said, startling them both and causing them to turn in his direction. “You okay?”
She shook her head and was clearly trying to smile, but it wasn’t really working. “Let’s just say that being hit by a car might have improved my day.”
Dean frowned, pushed the intense feeling of protection that was still flooding through him away, and added another notch into the ‘crazy’ column, before nodding in a placating manner. “Well, it’s been swell, but we really need to go. Got somewhere to be,” he said and nodded, turning around to head back to the car.
He caught Bobby’s look of surprised confusion that practically screamed ‘what the hell are you doing? We can’t leave her out here, she might be a demon’ and rolled his eyes, because, if he was honest, he really didn’t want to leave her out there anyway. Even if it was for the complete opposite reason. He walked straight to the boot of his car and pulled out a flask before heading right up to the girl and pouring the contents over her head.
“What the hell, are you insane?”
“Look, lady, you’re the one lying in the middle of the road playing with traffic. I’m just making sure.”
“Making sure of what?” she demanded, looking up at him with fire in her eyes and he was pretty sure he wasn’t meant to find it attractive. “That the rain hadn’t already soaked me through.”
“It stopped raining yesterday,” he said, and decided that she must, in fact, be crazy. Even if she was actually pretty hot now that he’d got a good look.
“Yesterday?” she asked and looked down at the road. She took a deep breath and rubbed her fingers against her temples. “It felt like…it felt like it was still raining when…” She looked up at him. “I don’t understand.”
“Well, you’re talking crazy, so don’t expect me to follow either.” He glanced at Bobby, who indicated his watch, and nodded to the man before turning his attention back to her. “Look, we’d really like to help you out, but we’ve got a bit of a situation here and, well, it’s really not very safe.”
“I can take care of myself.”
Dean frowned, because she sounded soft and lonely and completely incapable of understanding the meaning of the word ‘danger’, but the look in her eyes told him that she meant it. Because the truth was that it looked like she’d seen too much danger and that was something that was very familiar. On his worst days, he saw that look in the mirror.
“Okay,” he said after a moment. “Come on.”
He reached out to help her to her feet, gripping her arms so tight he was pretty sure he’d leave bruises, but not really caring, so long as it stopped her from swaying and falling to the ground again. She blinked a few times and he crouched slightly so that he was eye level with her, his frown asking her if she was okay. She turned her head to glance behind, looking at the tree line with an expression that was such a strong mixture of confusion and grief that it made his protective vibe go haywire again.
“They left me for dead,” she said softly, disbelievingly. “They-they should have known I would wake up…I wake up. They know that. I…” Taking a shaky breath, she looked back at him, shaking her head and clearly willing back the tears he could see in her eyes. “I don’t understand why they left me here.”
“What happened?” he asked softly, standing up straight again, but not letting go of her arms. “What happened to you?”
“I…I really don’t know.”
Dean took a deep breath and nodded. “Okay. We’ll figure it out.”
She smiled sadly at him and said, “Chloe. My name’s Chloe.”
“Dean.”
“I’d say it’s nice to meet you, Dean, but you nearly ran me over with your car.”
He chuckled, shaking his head and marvelling at the strength of a woman who, even upset and broken, could pull a joke out of her hat.
“Dean, we gotta get moving.”
Bobby’s voice startled him and he frowned, turning briefly to nod at the man. “Come on,” he said to Chloe, his mind now back on his own problems. ”We need to get going.”
She nodded, but stopped him when he tried to pull her towards the car. “Why?” she asked simply.
Dean took a deep breath, looked down at her and didn’t even pretend he didn’t understand. She seemed strong, but despite that, she looked so small, so scared and alone and, shaking his head, he answered her honestly. “I don’t know. But, for some reason, I actually believe you.”
She smiled and nodded. “Okay,” she said, and slipped out of his grasp as she walked shakily towards the car. “Where are we going?” she asked, pausing at the car for him to let her in. He thought it was more because she wanted him to be sure that he wanted to let her in, rather than any particular expectation of gentlemanliness on his part.
He opened the door for her and gestured for her to get inside, seating himself and closing the door before answering. “Cold Oak, South Dakota.“
“The most haunted town in America? Are you out of your minds?”
Dean and Bobby exchanged startled glances and simultaneously turned back to look at her.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, her voice so quick that he could barely keep up with her. “Stop looking at me like I’m crazy when you’re headed to an abandoned village that is filled with paranormal activity.”
Dean gaped at her for a moment, before shaking his head. “I’m looking at you like you’re crazy, because you know what the hell we’re talking about.”
“Why do you want to go there?” she demanded.
“Why don’t you tell me?” he growled, his hand itching to pull his gun on her, despite the fact that he knew deep down that she had nothing to do with this. Her knowledge of Cold Oak, however, was enough to put him on edge. “What do you know about it?”
“Why do I get the feeling that you’re asking me about something other than the things that go bump in the night?”
“Oh, no, Chloe,” Dean said, almost warningly. “That’s exactly what I’m asking you. I want to know how you know about it.”
“It’s on the internet,” Chloe said slowly, almost as if she could tell that he was no longer sure she wasn’t a threat after all. “I’m a reporter – was a reporter,” she corrected, almost as if she didn’t know what the hell she was anymore. “I used to write about this stuff. It…I was surrounded by it for years.”
“Where are you from?” Bobby asked softly, frowning at her a little.
She hesitated for a moment, glanced at Dean briefly, looking at him and Bobby as if she was trying to gauge their trustworthiness. After a moment, however, she relaxed slightly. “I grew up in Smallville.”
Dean nodded, his eyebrows rising for a moment. “No wonder you know all about the weird. Not even hunters go there.” He turned back to face the window and started the engine, as Bobby gave Chloe an assessing look.
“Hunters?” she questioned and Dean decided he’d leave that one to Bobby. If she was from Smallville and not oblivious to the goings on there, she likely knew enough about the weird to accept (relatively speaking, anyway) what they had to tell her. In the meantime, Dean had enough to worry about. He reversed away from the edge of the road and hit the gas as soon as he could. He’d already wasted enough time picking up their current passenger.
He had a brother to save and damned if he was going to let that yellow eyed son of a bitch stop him.
