Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire...yes, I HAVE seen it! *g*

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire...

Allow me to begin with OMFG! *squee*

Okay, this will be divided into parts, so that you can read what you want and skip the rest! There will be plenty of spoiler space between each section and at the end, so that you can read and reply without worrying about seeing bits you don't want to. If you're reading it all, sorry, you'll have to put up with all the huge spaces in between!

*whimper*

Seriously, I was speechless for so long after it. It was absolutely FANTASTIC. I loved it to BITS. It was funny, really funny, exciting, heart warming, heart wrenching, sad, on the edge of your seat OMG what's happening next, PERFECT! *squee*

Sure, they missed out chunks of storyline and they changed things, but unlike the other films, these bothered me less, as I could completely see why it was those particular things. The story kind of jumps around a bit, especially at the start, and that grates if you pay a lot of attention to it; what I mean is that it seems to be done in episodes, i.e. it's like lots of events that aren't really strung together, they're just there. However, this isn't necesarily a really bad thing as it gets a lot more into the story without worrying about continuity errors, because everything is contained. Am I making sense? Hope so!

I'm likely to mention this below when I talk about Harry, but can I just say 'hats off to Daniel Radcliffe'. He's AMAZING. I could see bits in parts of the other films where I felt as if he was having to force his emotions, but this is just perfect. I mean, seriously, I can't fault him in the slightest, especially with the end, but I won't talk about that in this section, because that would involve spoilers!

I really don't think I could praise this film enough. I want to see it a million times more! It's just not something I could ever tire of. I think the fact that they're older and using loads of innuendo (seriously, it's fab!) makes it more accessable to the slightly older fans. *shrug* I dunno. I just loved it.

In other words, GO SEE! At the earliest available opportunity! NOW if you can!!!

All of the following sections will have film spoilers in them, but there will also be space between each cut in case you only want to read some of them.

This next cut has MAJOR SPOILERS in it. I mean, seriously, if you want to read it, do so at your own risk. I'll likely post a link back to this post after the film has been released anyway, but this talks in depth about what they do and don't have in the film and what they do differently. I don't go into everything, but there's a fair bit.

The Story

Okay, so they skip out bits like...

Rita Skeeter's status as an animagus, Draco talking to her, and most of that storyline actually, but what she is in is great and you don't miss anything for having had that part slimmed down to it's minimum. Heh, although I have to mention the MAJOR innuendo with the broom cupboard! Hah, it ventures on creepy given the respective age difference! That scene is great.

There's no BILL!!! I've been getting all excited about seeing my Bill on screen and that bit was cut, or never filmed! Mrs. Weasley isn't in the film at all as they merge the start into lots of little bits, which is actually a lot better, even if I was so upset not to actually see the quidditch match. It's really annoying! You get to see the teams come out, loads of effects and then BAM! You're back in the Weasley's tent with the twins and Harry (even Ginny a little) ripping the piss out of Ron for fancying Krum. Heh, it's great.

Ooh, random; you hear Hermione, Hagrid and Ron singing the school anthem in the background when they're in the forest. They're all singing the same tune, but it's still there!

Bagman's not in it, but I didn't really miss that storyline too much.

OMG, I have to groan over one part,..although it's actually really funny! The entrance by Beauxbatons is hilarious and so CHEESY! Durmstrang really isn't much better, but again, quite funny.

After the first task, Harry gets right into playing up for the Gryffindors and all I could think was how great it was to see him acting like a real teenager! Hah!

Padma and Parvati both appear to be Gryffindors, which is just...odd.

This is just a wee break down of what I thought of certain characters/actors/interactions. There will STILL BE SPOILERS in these cuts.

Harry/Daniel

Allow me to start by saying how glad I am that DR has reached legal age and the bath scene won't reserve us all a smoky, fiery place in the lowest level of HELL! No one that young should be allowed to look that good. That's all I'm saying on the subject! [livejournal.com profile] mental_midget, you know what I mean!

Okay, this guy seriously impressed me. The acting at the end, in and after the graveyard had my heart stopping. It's not forced in the slightest and I wanted to curl into a ball and cry for him. It's just so simple and so powerful and just...wow. Seriously. I can't actually express enough how much I loved him in this film. Not to mention the little bugger's filthy mind coming to the fore! Heh, so funny.

I could comment on every aspect of the film and what I thought about how he played it, but that would likely bore you and get you all annoyed at me for spoiling EVERYTHING for you! Plus, hello, time consuming...not that I'd complain, except that my muse may just have come out of hibernation thanks to this film (do dragons hibernate? well, Jeffrey does!).

LOVE HIM!

Hermione/Emma

I think I'll likely mention this again a few times, but I loved her in the fight after the ball. The way she just slumps onto the stairs and cries after the boys have left is just so sad! Emma really comes into her own in this film, despite the fact that I think we've lost book Hermione a little too much. I think I like this Hermione just as much, if not more, simply because Emma plays her beautifully. She's very good at bringing out a certain chemistry with everyone she's on screen with, a natural easy chemistry and I love it.

Ron/Rupert

Ron's far from being my favourite character and I always thought that Rupert was a little too hammy with him, despite being good and being very funny. However, in this film I not only like him, but I think he's natural. He reminds me a lot of one of my little brothers friends from high school actually! I really liked him in this film and I really loved the interaction he had with everyone.

The Trio

They really are best friends. There's nothing else to it. I'd even go so far as to say, screw wanting Harry/Hermoine for the films, I just don't want any romance to interfere anywhere, because the trio's perfect the way it is. Daniel, Emma, and Rupert are just fantastic and the fact that they've grown together both as actors and friends over the last few years comes across beautifully. I loved it and, more often than not, this film shows them as really, really, really close friends, as it should.

Harry/Hermione vs Ron/Hermione - for abby_i

Okay, I'll start off by *squee*-ing! There is SO MUCH Harry/Hermione! Seriously! They're really trying to get the Hermione/Ron to work and, I have to admit, it works a lot better in this film and OMG Emma made me want to cry during the row after the ball, but I won't spoil it all for you. There is some Hermione/Ron this time, but I just don't see it as more than friends to be honest. The soon-to-be-romance isn't really forced, but it's not really there either. There are some oh-so-cute moments between Harry and Hermione, but other than that, it's just about their friendship and I love that. The Hermione/Harry was like that a lot; you'd believe they were closer than Ron and Harry were, but there's serious chemistry between Daniel and Emma that they just love to flaunt! If you're comparing, I'd have to be honest and say...'prepare yourself for Harry/Hermione, because it wins hands down'!. But more than that, the friendships are just right.

Krum and Hermione/Krum, plus Harry in relation

Krum is adorable! I'm sorry, I love him! He's so cute and he looks terrified of his rabid teenybopper fanclub at times! Hee! And there are these adorable little glances between him and Hermione, which is just SO CUTE. There's also this ADORABLE, and hilarious, chat between Harry and Hermione, where Hermione points out that 'Victor's more of a physical guy'...to which Harry tries not to laugh and she digs in deeper and deeper and it's just so funny! I'm not going to spoil it completely, but OMG so funny!

They're old enbough to be pervy now and it's fab!!!

Ron and Harry's Friendship, the Dreaded Dancing Leasons with McGonagall, and the Yule Ball!

These guys are regular teenagers who are friends. It sounds like a weird statement to make, but what I mean is that it's so natural and I love the fighting. It's REAL. Ron even tells Harry to 'piss off'! *g* It's just great. There's no more exagerated facial expression (well, a few, maybe! But it works!) or little kiddie friendship, it's two teenagers who fight when they can't get along, talk about how hard it is to get a date because girls 'travel in packs', and just have a laugh. It's fab. I really love these two.

And, oh, the dancing lessons! Allow me to just laugh and laugh and laugh, it was even funnier than Ron's dress robes! ;) The twins and Harry have some really cool interaction here, too.

The Yule Ball was great. I really liked it even though it wasn't what I expected and even though Hermione's wearing pink (it's a really pretty dress, actually, it's just meant to be blue!). However, the best bit had to be the talks about Hermione before hand. I love Harry pointing out that they'd tease her if she told them who she was going with and Ron's being adamant that she was sitting in her room alone, however, Harry's reaction to her in the dress? *squee* so cute! And Kudos to Emma Watson for the fight afterwords. She was fantastic and she makes your little heart ache for her! Adorable.

Ginny

I actually loved her in this! Those of you that remember far enough back will recall that I really wasn't keen on Bonnie as Ginny, not in the slightest. She wasn't my Ginny and I didn't take to her in any of the previous films. However, despite not being in it a lot, the director seemed to really use her and she's more a part of the group now. She's beginning to get her quirks and she's talking more and I just really like her now! Some of her lines to tease her brothers etc are just ...GINNY! *g* Am very happy now. Maybe the realisation that she gets to kiss Daniel in a few years has her coming out of her shell! LoL!

The Twins

Are gorgeous. It's official! Heh, not to mention the fact that they just get better with every film. Again, wasn't keen on them in the first film, but they grow on me more and more with each film and now I just WANT THEM! Hah! I really love their friendship with Harry in this film. In fact I loved it in the last one, too, but they're about more in this one and I just love the interaction. They're dead chummy with Harry and the way the three of them (and sometimes Ginny) are teasing Ron all the time is just so cute.

Cedric

...is a bit of a prat actually. I wasn't keen on him. I mean, there were moments when I though, yeah, he's cute, but I didn't take to him like I did in the book. Perhaps he reminded me a little too much of some of the prats I went to school with.

Neville

I love Neville! However, Neville can DANCE. Seriously. He can DANCE. And he does. With Ginny. ALL NIGHT. It's just wrong, and yet I loved it. I have to say that, although they touch on it, they don't explain anything about his parents which annoyed me, because the wee man's trying so hard to make people notice in this film! It's really well done, I only wish we'd got more of an explanation than Karkaroff's sentencing in the pensieve when he rats out Barty Crouch Jr. (Yes, you read that right).

Draco

Draco! World Cup! SUIT!!! *dies*

*ahem* I really like Draco in this one, he's hardly in it, he's mostly in the background, but I just thought he was so much more natural in it. I really like the way he just randomly appears...up a tree, for instance...

Moody

I actually like Moody. He's not quite my Moody, but it works better. You suspect him less, even though you know who he is. I don't know, I didn't mind him, although the eye was a bit too toy-looking for my liking.

Barty Crouch Jr.

Okay, I have to be honest and say that (a) I'm now looking forward to seeing DT as Doctor Who, despite the fact that (b) I didn't like Barty Crouch. I didn't like the way he came across; it seemed as though he'd been the the Ronald Weasley school of acting ala film one.

*hides*

I just though it was a bit too much. I'm not sure. Maybe he'll grow on me with more viewing.

Dumbledore

Okay, I realise he'll never replace our first and only Dumbledore, but he was perfect for this film. You totally believe that Lord Voldemort would be scared of him. I'm a little scared of him! He was a darker character in parts of the film that he wasn't in the book, but it kinda works. I actually liked it. I think the only bit I didn't like was the slight unsettling feeling I got seeing him devoid of hope in himself, just after Harry looks into his pensieve. It's a little...off, which makes it kinda creepy, at least to me! But I really liked that.

Cho Chang

Cho is Scottish! *g*

Cho is really sweet.

Cho is on the Hogwarts Express...which I find odd. Why would a Scottish student travel all the way to London only to have to come all the way back? *shrug* it's still really cute.

In the books I found that I really didn't like Cho and I really didn't buy Harry fancying her, I'm not sure why, I just didn't. In the film, however, she's lovely and Daniel is ADORABLE playing on the crush.

Snape and Karkaroff

Snape is actually barely in it, which is a shame. However, what's totally bizarre is that he's the one providing the comic relief! It's absolutely hilarious at some of his parts. Alan Rickman must have had a blast doing some of it. However, he really just isn't in it a lot.

I wasn't really sure about Karkaroff, to be honest. He's just not really in it a lot, is the problem, I think, because he was actually great. *shrug* I dunno!

Allow me now to finish with the following statement; I WANT A HUNGARIAN HORNTAIL! It's so PRETTY! *g* (And that's not a spoiler, just my dragon love!)

Ooh, and talking of dragons, I actually want the cute little copies they get out of the bag as well! They're ADORABLE! *g*

Anyway, I better be offskee. I haven't eaten yet. Hopefully will be on later to read the f-list.

*squee* My [livejournal.com profile] heliona comes back on Saturday!!! So excited! *g*

[identity profile] danamulder.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I read most of this, just because I've read the book, so what's to really spoil? hee

Besides, I just wanted to see how the Harry/Hermione was, since they're really pushing that in the trailers, and now I'm more excited than ever! Whatever happens, I love watching those two together, they're as adorable as can be. *loves*

So thanks for the very thorough review. I can't wait to go see it this weekend!

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
*g* Good girl! ;)

I'm so tempted to go to the staff showing tomorrow night!

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, aren't they gorgeous together? To be honest, they're just best friends for a lot of it, but there are some serious MOMENTS! *g*

[identity profile] stevie-jane.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)

Krum is adorable, sometimes I think he's really underappreciated - he noticed Hermione first and he's lovely, he needs more respect. *loves him*

Always great to know there are plenty of Harry/Hermione moments, the chemistry does so improve the films. The kiss on the forehead I heard about in particular will spawn many icons, I can feel it. ;)

The Snape/Hermione bit - is it the scenes where the trio are supposed to be studying while Snape is monitoring them? Because when I saw that clip I giggled like a loon. Mostly because Snape hit Ron when he commented on Hermione being a girl, I can so twist that to Snape not liking anyone hitting on Hermione. He wants to hit them (preferably about the head) instead. ;)

Then Hermione going straight to Snape when she says someone already asked her? Hee. "Bye Ron, snooze you lose, and you're too late by far. *runs off towards Snape*"

CLASSIC.

[identity profile] abby-i.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Question. Is the scene where Hermione holds Ron, and then Harry's hand still in the film?

[identity profile] abby-i.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I've just finished reading the rest now. Thanks for sharing!

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I have serious Krum!Love!

OMG, I can so see you twisting that! Hah! Yes, the kiss on the forehead is teh cute. And yes, that's the scene I meant.

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*frown* I don't really remember seeing that, but I might be going to the staff showing tomorrow night after work, so I'll keep a special look out. There is a lot of touching, so I might have missed it! ;)

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem. I look forward to your own report; usually so much more in depth and much more interesting! *g*

LOL, well I'm conning directly after the film, so I may not get to do a report. :(

Cheers, good to read! We all know the story, therefore there are no true spoilers for me.

[identity profile] loriel-eris.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*only reads first cut*

I really hope it is that good. I'm almost looking forward to it now. What I will say tho, how the hell can one be spoiled for the film? Yes, I know, I say that and I still didn't read what you'd written, but still... It seems to be ohmygod so crazy!

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know, I'm just aware that some people don't like to know what they;ve changed and what's the same and all the little extra bits. I didn't mention much, but I figured some people would get annoyed! My post for the third film (a week and a half before it was released) was read only by one person because no one wanted to know!

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
LoL! Well, some people (*ahem* You didn't read it!) don't want to know what's missing and what's not. They don't want to know the way things are done. I have to say, if the situation was reversed, I wouldn't have read it.

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, sweetie, they cut it. I know exactly where that is. You don't get to see it from that angle.

[identity profile] abby-i.livejournal.com 2005-11-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
WOE!
ext_33206: (Default)

[identity profile] roadrunner1896.livejournal.com 2005-11-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I knew they'd leave out the stuff they did, but I did hope they'd at least mention some of it a bit more detailed. People who haven't read the book don't know anything about Fred and George trying to get money for their joke shop and the whole giant problem (though I can see them leaving that out of the next movie, too, so it might not be that bad) and I think not bringing in the house elves was part of why Hermione was so different in this movie. Most of her Hermioneness in that book comes from that storyline.

And don't let me get started on the pink dress. ;)

Even though I expected those cuts, because they are actually the ones that made sense, I would have liked at least a tiny mentioning of a few of them in a throw away line or something.

I didn't squee as much as I expected me to do. I did quite a few times, though. And I might get over all that I missed at second viewing and like it more then. I am linking PoA more and more everytime I see it.

[identity profile] danamulder.livejournal.com 2005-11-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm cool with it. As long as Ron's as uninvolved as possible. I know you said there's a lot of Trio stuff, but I just can't like him, no matter how hard I try. And it didn't start out a shipper thing at all. *shrug*

But yeah, Harry and Hermione are just adorable together, and I love that they're best friends but that whole boy/girl thing gets in the way. hee
ext_2180: laurel leaf (Default)

[identity profile] loriel-eris.livejournal.com 2005-11-16 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I never said I was being logical!

some people don't want to know what's missing and what's not. They don't want to know the way things are done.

Yeah, you're right. I couldn't actually figure out why I wasn't reading reviews etc, but that's it... *g* The amounts of clips and photos that are floating around, I'm surprised that anyone is going in unspoiled!

[identity profile] eretria.livejournal.com 2005-11-17 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad to not be alone in liking the movie. Because, wheeeeee! Loads of love for it.

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-20 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't like Ron much in the first three films, but I really like him in this one. As [livejournal.com profile] eretria put it, he looks like he's taken some acting lessons ;)

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-20 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at least you're having fun at a con, which usually means pretty picture get posted *g*

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-20 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I found I LOVED the first viewing unconditionally, but saw more to miss/more to dilike on the second viewing. However, I still understand all the cuts. I mean, Fred and George taking bets is still an in character thing to do, even if the audience don't know what it's for. I have to be honest and say I didn't really miss the storylines they cut, but I will always say that you can't understand the films without having read the books, but despite that to think of them as completely seperate entities.

Seeing it for the third time tomorrow, here's hoping it's just as good, if not better! ;)

[identity profile] kyizi.livejournal.com 2005-11-20 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, totally! I was so upset when I read in the Metro that they were slagging Daniel Radcliffe. I mean, yeah, some of it maybe, but I thought he was great in this one!
ext_33206: (Default)

[identity profile] roadrunner1896.livejournal.com 2005-11-20 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, when I know the book to a movie, I always try to make out what is different at first viewing. I don't know why and I can't switch that off. But from second viewing on I can see it as seperate entities and just enjoy the movie as a movie, because I know what is missing and am prepared for that.

I need to see it a second time soonish. Why did I have such a bad headache yesterday when the others went again?

And I am not sure how necessary stuff is for the remaining movies. Maybe you they will leave hout the whole WWW stuff and that is why it doesn't matter to know why they did it and that Harry gave his winnings to them and all.

I think we need to have seen all seven movies to understand that. And then I will need to interview Oliver, who never read the books and isn't planning on doing so, how he understands everything and then I'll explain what he is missing because he didn't read the books. Not that that will make him read, but still.
